Lawmakers continue examination of NJ's property taxes
TRENTON, N.J. -- A legislative push to lower New Jersey's property taxes, which are the highest in the nation, is to move into its second week with lawmakers set to examine how to change local government services, public worker benefits and school funding. Three panels, each charged with delving into a different cause of the ballooning taxes, are to meet starting Tuesday. A fourth committee, formed to investigate whether the state constitution should be changed, held its first meeting Friday. .

N.J. Power Companies: Try To Conserve Despite Heat
Scorching playgrounds were vacant, business at ice cream shops boomed and utility companies readied for possible power-supply problems Monday as New Jersey baked under another round of summertime heat. Every part of the state was under an excessive heat watch or warning, and temperatures were expected to reach triple digits in the next few days. "It certainly is possible that we could have a record today or tomorrow," said Betty Kennedy, spokeswoman for Atlantic City Electric, a power company with about 500,000 customers in southern New Jersey. Kennedy said there's enough power to keep air conditioners humming, though the utility was asking customers to conserve when they can and it was on guard for the outages that often accompany serious heat waves. The heat of the power and the sun can cause electric lines to sag and when it's this hot, there's always the chance violent thunderstorms will pop up.
