Mortgage firm suspends mailings in Wisconsin

A West Virginia mortgage company has suspended mailings in Wisconsin because of potential legal issues, which negatively impacted the firm's second quarter net income.

Summit Financial Group Inc.'s mortgage banking group suspended mailings to Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois during the second quarter so the firm could assess the impact of recent federal court rulings on the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The act addresses requirements the firm's prescreened credit offers must meet.

Editorial: Should state government follow family budget model?

Mark Green has become roughly the millionth candidate for public office to demand that government follow the same budget guidelines that families use.Is this really a good idea?Green, the Republican candidate for governor, accused Democratic incumbent Jim Doyle of reckless budget practices that have left Wisconsin with a large structural deficit."Every month, families across Wisconsin sit down at their tables to figure out how to make ends meet," Green said. "They know that it is wrong to take out a second mortgage on their home or spend the kid's college money to go on a lavish vacation."But are families as responsible as Green implies? Maybe not. Consider credit card debt. The average credit card debt per household reached a staggering $9,312 in 2004, an increase of 116 percent since 1994.
